  • Blogging time again

Nothing exciting is going on. And nothing negative for that matter either.

No bad news for over two weeks. Am I living on borrowed time?

Still like my red hair. The Cat Mobile is running just fine.

Me and the cat are all alone at my place. Room renter has left for fam time during winter break. My son is on the road for the week. The place all to ourselves!

I am busy with appointments. I have all the court stuff behind me. All the stuff for lack of a drivers license and getting pulled over while driving with out the license has all been addressed. Now I just have to figure out how to pay for it all...Ack, but fines reduced quite a bit. I will try my best to NOT complain, I promise.

Job searching but there is nothing to be found.

I am in the process of applying for something called the Work Investment Act. I do not know if this is a California thing only or not. It is educational assistance available for those who are unemployed and underemployed. As with all things State and County, it is a process. I suggest that if you are in the same underemployed, unemployed laid off worker status that you research this in your county. Help is help, funds are funds. A friend told me about it, I had no clue this was available. When I signed up for CalJobs through the Employment Developement offices of Yolo County, they did not tell me about this either. Ask, research, show up, get help. These are very discouraging times.

I did the interview last week, today I turn in the paperwork. There is a two day goal assessment class (I will do that the week after Thanksgiving). This is all to be reviewed to see if you meet the eligibility requirements. The funds are applied to vocational-labor type schooling that you can complete within a year and become certified in what ever field it is to go to work full time.

It is also time to enroll in Spring semester at the City College. I will and am, just waiting to see how this may affect this other thing. I am sure there are adult education vocation type of classes at the junior college. I want to make sure I do this right. I want to go for a degree but I am sure that I can include this certification in that process.

My mom is doing T'day at her house with the help of my brother and my daughter. I cleaned her house over the weekend. I will bring a dish and a pie. But it looks like my Thanksgiving day chores are done until it is time for clean up. Cool.

Socializing has revved up quite a bit. Everyone is ready for the holidays around here. Met up with my gallery pals twice last week for happy hour beers and kavetching. There may or may not be an opening for a coffee shop manager there. I am trying to figure out a way they can hire me. So, brainstorming and free beer. Does not get better than that...til somebody gets hurt!

I drank Bud as I am on a BUDget...

Also met up with my friends Quentin and Bogden for pizza and drinks. It was Quentin's birthday this past Sunday. I promised to read their tarot cards as a gift. A new friend joined us too. A friend met through unusual circumstances. She was the ex girlfriend of the guy who tried to kill me last year. She contacted me right after we broke up to warn me how dangerous he was. I had poo pooed her at the time. But let her know how all that turned out. We have remained in contact ever since. She is a cool girl and I am glad that she has become a new friend.

    That is the front door

We had great fun at Zelda's, our favorite pizza place. We talked about returning to school, our kids, our love lives (mostly lack of since Bogden is the only one with one). Everyone got a card reading and enjoyed it. I like doing it. I have been reading cards for something like twenty years now. I have read at psychic fairs and at a metaphysical bookstore. I have done phone readings for people around the world. I enjoy it an the people I meet.

Another new friend hung out with me on Saturday night on his way to see his fam for the Thanksgiving week holiday. He is a friend of my xanga pal Judyrutrider. Though we have never met, I figured if he is a pal of Judy's  he must be a good egg.

Bijou and Reeby, the finest pets in all the land!

He and his fabulous furry pals showed up Saturday night after a long drive from So Cal. We chatted, we ate, we pet the pooches. Cool dude. Cool dogs. It was a relaxing evening considering. I love making new friends! He is welcome on my couch any time. Same goes for you Judy. Hell, for you, I would sleep on the couch! Well, probably not, but that sounds more inviting doesn't it? (Ps Guy, thanks for the Ginger Snap Cookies!!!)

So, it is Monday. I am up early. For not particular reason. I am turning over a new leaf kind of. Winter seems to be motivating me. Maybe it is just getting all that stressful court stuff attended to that has my energy re-revved. I do not know. But I am more excited about the days beginning than I have been in some while.

My Thanksgiving week is super busy with cleaning jobs. Thank you Universe. I needs the funds.

    http://www.treehugger.com/thanksgiving.jpg

How is your Thanksgiving week shaping up? Are you cooking for T'day or heading to fam and friends? Is the cooler temps reinvigorating you and making you want to hibernate?

    Fill me in xanga-hood!

  • Weekend in Swansboro

Too much drama on the home front so I decided to give my poor room mate a break and head out of town to visit my pal Kim. She is housesitting for a friend of hers who has gone to France for five months or so. It is a very good situation for her.

But Swansboro? Good grief. I have never been there but have HEARD all the awful tales of the road and bridge to get there. Eleven twisty turny narrow steep miles to Kim's cabin in the woods. I have commuted but not for years. I thought, come on, how bad can it be? Besides, it would just be nice to get out of dodge! (Swansboro is just North East of Placerville)

       http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2740/4107415635_8ac915cc3f_o.jpg   http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2799/4108181706_6a459537c5_o.jpg
And that bridge? It scared the hell out of me coming and going!

Holy cow. It was worse than anything that I could imagine. And apparently it gets very icy in the winter. They actually close the road. I cannot even imagine what that bridge is like when it snows.

    http://www.bridgemeister.com/imgdda/ddcamosquito3.jpg
    Oh my DOG!

    http://www.mediamarketing.ba/mat/dizajn/BiBox5L_Crni.jpg
We have no pride and it was free!

Ok, but once I got there and Kim poured me some wine, everything was fine.

The place was magical. Really. Just so cozy and well decorated and comfortable. I felt right at home. I unpacked my bag of food and started making guacamole dip. I brought carne asada to make for dinner. Honestly though, I had cleaned my mom's house that morning and was just tired and not organized in her kitchen, I let Kim take over the dinner prep. I washed and cleaned and drank and drank...

    http://la.foodblogging.com/wp-content/thumb-Pacos1.JPG

Dinner was fantastic. Thank you Kim! We stuffed ourselves and watched some custom bike reality show. I have no clue what it was called. We were catching our buzz so we could drunk facebook! I brought my camera and took way too many blurry photos. They seemed like great ideas at the time. DELETE!

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2547/4107376906_aeef936649_o.jpg

But, most importantly, I got photos of my new red head look! Not a great photo of me but a good one of my new do!

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2584/4106569789_26532f40bd_o.jpg
Check out the place! That fireplace has a remote control! YESSS!

Kim flashed me in this photo to make me smile. It worked!

So the question of the following morning was "How do you spill box wine?" Apparently I did just that. Oh my dog...I have many useful skills. Why do I not have a most excellent job or boy friend????

This little forest friend was in the front yard when I got up this morning!

I made coffee and breakfast for us this morning. We were both in kind of slow motion this morning. Our tranquil surroundings did not prompt us to want to much more than shower and sip coffee, to be honest.

Isn't this place so cute? The back deck looks out into the forest. You do not see a single neighbor. Awesome.

Me with the red hair and my Cat Mobile!

It was time to hit the road. I did not want to deal with Apple Hill traffic if I could help it, or the end of the weekend traffic, for that matter. I packed my gear and headed for home...

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2762/4107298086_86d2524db0_o.jpg
I had to travel that bridge again...ack!!!

I pulled out of every cars way. I probably averaged about 14 miles per hour. My car was awesome though. On the ridiculously steep hairpin turn climbs up and down. I love my car!

    http://www.youngdahl.net/images/Geos_Key_Mosquito.jpg
This retainer wall was built in 2006 when intense rains caused an entire section of road to fail across a switchback and onto a lower portion of road, closing this main road into the community of Swansboro.

    http://www.dantesdame.com/07bellingham/9-whtacom-road.jpg   http://www.01cl.com/airport2.JPG

As white knuckle as this road is it is also very scenic. They even have an airport!

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2615/4107305938_16c61b8786_o.jpg
    Check out those fall colors!

Some really fancy homes can be found along this treacherous by way. Lots of vineyards as well. I am wondering if tons of winery's will be opening once a couple of grape harvests have been completed. This road is bad enough, but imagine it with wine tasting traffic.....ACK!

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2737/4107729096_6b9c976173_o.jpg

Anyhoos...I made it home in one piece. I think this will be an early night. I am tired as heck. I will make dinner for Gloria and I. Most likely read myself to sleep tonite. That is all the excitement this girl can handle.

Arrived in my garage May 2002 departed n July 10th 2009...

We had run together for years. Mostly a seasonal job by job kind of deal. My little Italian friend always had my back especially after the German had broke my heart in two. One morning, taking him out when he knew it was not in his best interest, old Johnny Law gave us the stink eye. I never made it to work that morning and my little Italian friend got a tow tuck ride to the big house...I couldn't spring him. I don't know where my little buddy ended up but he had a gorgeous new canvas top to take him there. Mezza fortuna, my little Spider friend.

    FOUR...

Shortly before my birthday in July 2009: HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAY!

The Bat Mobile. Eight hundred clams.
No expectations, just a little hope to get from point A to point B for a little while.

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h104/vagabondgirl007/GTi004.jpg?t=1257388487

October: But when all was said and done, even the vise grips could not save him.

Thank you   http://stagnes.dio.org/images/mary.jpg (Bat Mobile for getting me where I had to be on time).
You gave your life for the greater cause.
You did not have that axle break and put a whole in your own transmission in vain.
    Is that automobile Suicide?
I hope you will still go to auto dismantler heaven.

Here we are at the beginning of November.
All hope is certainly not gone but certainly tempered with reality and the dog awful truth. The best cough suppressant and lion tamer.

I am looking at bus schedules and riding my bike everywhere. I do not mind the bike stuff one bit. For one reason or another the bus bit just chapped my hide.

My mother is especially bothered by my not having wheels. I did not expect her vehement concern on getting mobile. She immediately offered up some cash to get me a reliable automobile. The cash offered was really unexpected (she has been helping me out so much that I am embarrassed and forever grateful).

    http://quest-motors.com/wp/wp-content/themes/partnerprogramm/images/middle.gif

We also agreed to call my uncle Dan because he has a car lot in Auburn (Quest Motors right off hwy 80 (530) 269-8171)

He checks out used and affordable vehicles all the time. He is honest and a cool dude. In fact an entire blog could be written about his cool flat track racing days. He appears for a moment in "Any Sunday" with Steve McQueen. Look for number 22 on a moto plate and that is him!

I have zero expectation because I am thinking that no reliable auto is going to be found for the dollar amount mom wants to spend. I am fine with this. All I see on craigslist is junk cars and so I cannot for a moment think that my uncle is going to have something we can count on for that amount. I am absolutely cool with this. I have to learn how to use the bus. Mom is awesome for even offering any kind of help, I love her and want to be there for her. Dag nap it.

Anyhoo, Dan has a car in a low dollar range but is not sure it will be reliable. And it is more than mom wants to spend plus tax and license. I do not get my hopes up. Dan is having his mechanic check it out. It has high miles but is a European vehicle, so this may not matter depending on what the mechanic has to say. But my luck is pretty sad with the Euro's, even Dan knows the story. He does not want to sell us something that ends up being a stinker butt.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2625/3972608682_f541d1d8bf_o.jpg

I busy myself with as much work as I can pedal my bike to and take care of my errands in Woodland by borrowing Michael's drummer's car for a morning. Thank you Jon! This would be the family van with the antlers! I stopped to put gas in it and the woman that works the register at the gas station was outside having a smoke, "Nice Horns" she commented as I went in to pay for the gas...Indeed!

Tueday eve rolls around and my mom calls. The Euro car has checked out a-ok and mom is willing to pay a little more. We both feel better knowing that Dan has had a hand in this and his mechanic gave it the look over.

I would be happy with ANY wheels. Anything safe and reliable. I do not care about a radio or ac or how it looks one bit at this point. Not at all, I promise you...

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2742/4075758165_6aed7a087a_o.jpg

Check out my mechanically sound European new ride...

Oh my dog, this thing has everything and so much more...

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2734/4076507128_b474a904a9_o.jpg
Wipers on the headlights! The Bat Mobile didn't even have wipers that worked!

This car is awesome. It has everything including every service record since it was new because it has only had one owner. A school teacher. Plus it came with those nifty tire stud deals that you can put on easily when it snows because the person who owned it lived at snow level. It has special traction options for wet and icy conditions. I am so lucky.

Do you think my karma has improved?????

  • Vice Grips, Art Openings and so so much more!

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2445/4065540209_5972814983_o.jpg
    The Vice Grips

And this is all that is left of the Bat Mobile.

My mechanic told me that the axle came apart from the wheel and some sort of flange thing. Once it came apart it whacked into the transmission and put a hole in it. A thousand clams, with a used or rebuilt transmission, is what it would cost to replace it. The clutch may need attention so no telling what the actual total cost might be. For my eight hundred dollar car.

Another one bites the dust. I am donating it.

    Formal Cogitation - Deladier Almeida

I was asked to work at the art gallery the last days of last week. On Friday eve there was an opening reception for a new show that displayed four talented local artists. It was an exciting and successful show. First floor was Del Almedia's new works. Please check out his site. This guy is prolific. He is best known for his California landscapes, but the scope of his work is so much more than landscapes.

    http://www.renemartucci.com/Resources/bigdog2.jpeg   http://www.renemartucci.com/Resources/wallbu2f.jpeg   http://www.renemartucci.com/Resources/water22.jpeg

Rene Martucci's ceramic works were on the second floor. She is known for her animal pieces. Her dog and cat sculptures are very popular with everyone. She captures our pets personalities dead on. Her new works are energetic in motion wall mounted sculptures. She is also a musician and I think she really understands movement and rhythm of people and pets. I enjoyed her show very much.

I served booze, my special skill. I had a fabulous time chatting, pouring hooch and mixing it up with all my Davis buddies that I have not seen in some time. It felt great to be doing a good job and to be appreciated. A long and successful day.

Sunday I was kind of exhausted and feeling a little punk. I kept a low profile hoping I would be up to going to a Halloween party I had been invited to. But no, early to bed. That was all I had in me.

My room mate, Gloria, has been hanging close to home these past few days because of finals. Up late studying and what not. I was woke up late in the night and over heard what sounded like a tv news station chatting away. I figured it must be Gloria listening to the news for background noise while she studied. Then I realized I recognized one of the voices. My son.

I looked at the clock, 3am. Even after fall back. I got up to find three boys sitting around my dining room table gnawing away on fast food and chatting as though they were at a coffee shop at lunch time. Always glad to seem him BUT, for dogs sake...shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Zac Nelson of Hexlove and Prints and currently Trawler Bycatch

Nothing says Good Morning Sunday, the day after Halloween and did you set your clocks back like a young musician in his underwear in my living room. My son, his pal Zac and a new guy I had not met before named Zack were conked in my living room. I knew that a huge breakfast had to be made for these boys. And gallons of coffee. Stat!

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rM2GYSNNXN4/SfwtuJGnbLI/AAAAAAAABD8/tP5VVdcWaU8/s400/scrambled-eggs-su-1017334-l.jpg

I organized my morning and made sure to set up the kitchen to begin cooking once the boys started to shake their sleepy heads awake. The boys woke up and began rattling around while I put together coffee and what not. But wait, there is more, so much more.

    http://www.biojobblog.com/coffee_roaster(1).jpg

The new Zack informed me that there were still two more members of the band sleeping in the van outside. They probably had no idea where he was since they rolled in so late. Oh well, I figure, slice more potatoes, scramble more eggs! The final two came in and seemed to be relieved that we also believed in coffee as a mid morning ritual.

Zack, Jonnie and Russ of Trawler  Bycatch out of Portland OR

They were very polite and set about to get refreshed and revived after a late night playing a radio show and house concert. They played me the recording of the radio show from KDVS, the local college radio station. Michael's band Afternoon Brother and Trawler Bycatch filled the station and played together. Way too much fun. I enjoyed sharing the music this morning with them while I put together a big morning after breakfast.

My son Michael and his long time friend, Zac

My son seems to get a kick out of showing up at my house at odd hours with a covey of musicians looking for a couch. No phone call, no warning. Honestly, I woke up at 3am to voices thinking it was a television. They all bedded down. His friend, Zac, is a pal of ours for some years. His ambient pop music has done quite well for him. His other projects keep him pretty busy too. He has no trouble giving me shit. I love that.  And I never recognize him. He is either heavily bearded or clean shaven. At 3am in the dark he is just another boy in my living room. It is great to see him! He creates this awesome ambient pop music that I love - check him out here: Prints

Jonnie the singer, Zack the broken handed guitar player and Russ the bass player

These kids were very polite. Zack number two was funny and a smarty pants right away. I appreciate that. He had a broken hand from some trouble with a train schedule sign. I believe the sign was belligerent and bothering passengers awaiting a late arriving train. Alcohol may have been involved but this was not clarified. Jonnie is gorgeous and has a super sultry voice that I appreciate. She also has another band she sings and plays keyboards for called Fist Fite. Russ is the bass player of this outfit and studied under Terry Riley (credited as one of the pioneers of Minimalism in the mid sixties, explored the use of tape loops, developed the time lag accumulator, performed All Night Concerts (10pm-6am)), my son informed me. He and Jonnie were pretty quiet.

Doing what every musician I have met does when on tour...

After everyone was fed and showered and properly caffeinated, they did what every touring band that I have ever met did...they youtubed. Yes, they youtubed. I swear, I would never know the silly things one could find on youtube if it were not for these charming and talented kids that end up in my living room from time to time. There was the Best Freak Out Ever, there was Pissed Off RV Sales Guy, Turrets Guy and on and on. A little angry for a Sunday but entertaining nevertheless. Actually the bestpart is everyone's banter during said youtube-isms.

Goodby Zac 1 and Zack 2. Good by Trawler Bycatch.

These kids packed it up and headed to Fresno. It was awesome to meet them. As for the moniker Trawler Bycatch, read the following: "
unwanted marine creatures that are caught in the nets while fishing for another species; "thousands of dolphins and porpoises and whales are killed as part of the by-catch each year"

My question is this: Are you kids the net or are you kids the unwanted marine species? I have to create some kind of back story but unfortunately, this needs attention.

Jon showed up after the other kids had left. This made my day complete. He and Michael lolly gagged watching bad movies, eating lunch and catching up on the days events. They left shortly after a dinner of home made chicken noodle soup and bisuits.

I have a stupid week of bus rides to Woodland. This no car business just stinks, I tell you.

How was your Halloween, xanga pals? Mostly Tricks or mostly Treats?
I know you guys think I lead this exciting life, but I swear, it just knocks on my door when I am dead asleep.

  • My Favorite Halloween Memory

I was just thinking of my favorite Halloween for the past several years and remembered an early Halloween in Davis, the kids trick or treat Downtown in full regalia. I was having lunch with a friend at a middle eastern place with a window view of the downtown streets. It was a spectacular thing to behold. The parents dressed up as well. The downtown businesses handed out candy.

That eve I went to Tracy and Kim's for dinner. We had some ween festive meal and watched Night of the Living Dead. Tracy decided to celebrate my birthday either early or late (more likely early, I was always the late one). We got wasted on martinis.

The film was fabulous, my gifts (a basket of ten or twelve small gifts!) were all blue and it was my most favorite Halloween that comes to memory. As I unwrapped each blue gift Trace would say to me "How can you be blue when I love you!!!??" It was on the heels of Bill dumping me shortly after I had moved to Davis.

  • I hate everything...but thank you

Well, I prefer to write when I actually have something to write about.

Unless, however, I have forty new photos of my children...but, alas, my children are scattered about hither and yon, so, no new kid pictures. I do have things to write about. It seems to be of the usual "Cassi has an adventure or a tragedy, you decide" variety.

    With pictures. Of course.

    My Beeeeautiful dot-air

This week, after starting out feeling pretty illin', has been super-cala-fragile-listic-expy-ala productive. Over the previous weekend I visited my daughter. She is doing wonderfully and looks gorgeous. I helped my mom with stuff. She is doing well. Her energy is down and her memory is scattered. I was glad to be over there checking in and visiting with her.

    http://www.ableremovalsandstorage.co.uk/images/packing-montage.png
Kim is so organized, color coding the boxes, I was impressed

Then to my girl pal Kim's to help her pack stuff for an upcoming move. She was awesome and we tackled her much dreaded office and her kitchen. We worked very hard and partied after we accomplished the tasks we had set for ourselves.

After my sick day I was all over the place following up on appointments and setting up more stuff. I had work and errands. I finally addressed a long stressed over traffic court appearance for later in the week. This thing has been looming over me like the most unwelcome of long put off responsibilities. I was relieved just to schedule the court appearance. This self inflicted situation, while understandable, has really created more problems than I could have imagined. So, I set an appointment to be in court this Friday, today, this afternoon.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2495/3744372309_55e43c1a74_b.jpg

The vise grips have been working over time on the Bat Mobile, amen!

Must mention, the Bat Mobile has been running just fine. Just fine, I tell you. Traveling back and forth to Woodland and Sacramento with out a problem. Up the hill to visit fam a couple of times. Not a hitch.

    http://content.ytmnd.com/content/3/0/5/305abec55c819713680bef3cd6505d76.jpg

I completely stressed myself out this morning over the court deal. I can get like that sometimes...well, alright, many the times. AND I drank coffee. No no no! I should know better. No matter, I pulled my day together, gathered any needed documentation and got to court on time. Signed in, went to the designated court room with about about 75 to 80 other folks. It was pretty organized. I have been to court, criminal and what not but never traffic court. I honestly did not know what to expect.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NHfwOemloPw/SGJnNlAvKUI/AAAAAAAAAN0/mtIZydqzZgM/s400/CenterForConstitutionalRights.bmp

The court guy in charge provided a very clear over view of what to expect. More folks came in and sat down. I figured I was about in the middle or a little more in the order of signing in, which is how each case is called on. Finally the judge/commissioner guy took the stand. He summarized what the other court guy had already discussed. He was clear and very nice. I was impressed how kind everyone seemed.

    Carol Miller Justice Center

Honestly, from my couple of phone calls for information, to my visit to make the court appointment, to signing in today, Sacramento Traffic Court has their shit and attitude together. I appreciate that a great deal.

Once things started rolling the judge/commissioner called about six cases up at a time and rolled through the sitch. You are charged with this, what is your plea, here is your verdict and fine, go talk to the DA. He reduced fines, signed off their infractions and kept things moving right along.

    http://christopheryates.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/a-hundred-bucks.jpg

One less Ben on my back

When I was called up he in fact reduced my fines by a hundred dollars. I was hoping for more but no matter, I am grateful for this and glad to start getting this deal behind me. You have no idea how this traffic monkey has been on my back.

    http://www.dallas-wellness-center.com/images/monkey_off_your_back_with_writing.jpg

I go to the finance office to make payment arrangements. I leave with a little pep in my step.

Confronting this stupid thing has been KILLING ME. It is finally going to be resolved. Yes!

I only saved a hundred bucks, but, geeze, a hundred bucks is still a hundred bucks. So, thank you Universe!

I was only there for just over an hour, too, I can get home and tackle more stuff on this day. No sense burning daylight!

I leave the court parking lot. I am turning onto the main road into traffic to head to the freeway home...

I accelerate from the stop sign onto the main boulevard...accelerating quick as a semi is heading up the road but I have time to get onto the lane...

I am in first gear and press the gas to get into my lane...the car is rolling from basic momentum but...
    NOTHING HAPPENS.

I go into second, nothing. I can hear the car accelerate and something is turning but the car is not motioning forward. The rolling noise of the front end has a kind of low thud thud thud with the roll of the tires but no real forward movement...

The first thing I think is this "At least I got to court on time and got this situation handled" (Alright, what I really thought was "I hate everything but thank you")

Then I panicked because I am in traffic. I roll to the small shoulder and stop.

    "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!"

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2527/4038779250_ac895ea5b4_o.jpg

This is a wet spot that was left on the road once we moved the car out of traffic

With help I manage to get the Bat Mobile backwards to a auto repair shop parking lot. I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have triple A, hell, I do not have anything. I call my mom. Uhm, for moral support. Then I call my Davis mechanic. He says he will try to help me find a tow but I never hear a word back. Finally, I start calling tow companies in Sacramento.  About an hour and half has passed.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2482/4038043605_532024ea2e_o.jpg

The Bat Mobile resting comfortably at a nearby parking lot (note the tell tale drip spots leading back to the Bat Mobile...who has been tampering with the Bat Mobile...note to self, is the Joker in town???)

I call like six places. They range in price from $240 to $85 bucks. Can you imagine this? The place called Budget was by far the most expensive. I kind of figured this but still thought to have some faith. Some of the ads read said Damage Free...well, I wondered if I did not care about that option, might they lower their price? Nobody laughed...

    http://blog.rednecklaughs.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/redneck-towing.jpg

I kind of figured going for the lowest price service, this guy was gonna show up

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/4038039909_f48e702963_o.jpg

But, no, I got a real tow truck driver with a real tow truck

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/4038035851_fe9d59597d_o.jpg

I think the end to a perfect day is a ride in a tow truck during rush hour traffic on Friday, don't you?

Interestingly enough, I called one guy and he says a hundred bucks. I say good, lets do this. I call the last couple of numbers on my list and another guys offers $85 so I says YES! I call back the other guy and he lowered his price for me. The cheaper guy was not remotely bothered when I called to cancel (seriously, who wants to drive to Davis from Sac during rush hour on Friday).

I finally got home around 6pm.

    http://www.prometheusbooks.com/images/whataretheodds.jpg

So, like, the weekend has not even started yet. Should I bother to get out of bed tomorrow, or maybe, percentage wise, do you think the coast is clear?

  • Afternoon Brothers, Wacky Storms and missing cats

Kim and I made our Beat Conference last through most of Tuesday.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2556/4013312810_0df7669bcb.jpg

Ah, one cool thing. Kim wanted to check out our Davis SPCA Thrift store. It completely rocks. I picked up a GRACO metrolite stroller for $7.50. This thing retails for $169.99 and aside from needing a little cleaning was in perfect condition. Total score. If you do not know, my daughter has a baby due in April of 2010.

    MAMA we're all crazy now

I had an undogly early appointment in Woodland on Tuesday morning. I was there at 8 am (I arrive at 8am to discover that I am there to make an appointment for that day...at 10am) amid crazy wild storming (it was raining rats and snow leopards) weather, tree debris, cars covered by broken branches. Leaves smothering the streets. The wind gusts were at around 52mph. I promise you it seemed far worse. I was anxiety stricken driving back and forth to Woodland. Once home, though, finally , the power goes off and I have a home filled to the brim.

The hair bet continues (Afternoon Brother, progressive metal titans)

Afternoon Brother had returned to the Sacramento area for this week before their continued out of town dates. Surprise for Kim and I.  But my living room easily accommodates three boys weary from the road. They had entered paradise. There was tons of cheap wine and pizza. Kim and I know how to throw a party and even if we are not aware that there is going to be one.

    http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs232.snc1/7924_1274779029902_1242736952_30828902_5081086_n.jpg

We had hellacious storms around here Monday night and all of Tuesday. My power was out from 11am to after 9pm. My place is 100% electric. We could not do anything, not even make tea. My cell phone died from over use and no way to recharge it. Cut off from all of humanity.

Michael doodling in his journal and playing guitar by candle light

We entertained our selves and each other for the night. Took a walk and ordered Chinese take out. Michael was busy on his guitar and writing in his journal. I checked on the PG&E guys and trucks that had been there all day but not making any headway. Michael and I had a really nice evening. Thankfully it was never cold since we had no heat.

I was up early on Wednesday. Gloria asked for a ride to school. The roads and paths were completely debris ridden and I understood. Traffic was ridiculous but still, I was happy to take her.

My friend Cheryl texted me about doing lunch. I had a 1pm appointment in downtown Davis and asked to meet after, for coffee.

    The missing Bubbles

We hooked up and caught up. She is helping a new friend try to find her lost cat. Cheryl had made up big and small fliers to distribute door to door hoping to find the missing Bubbles. I agreed to join her in canvasing the immediate neighborhood of the cat's last seen whereabouts. Lots of walking, chatting and distributing. I hope the missing cat gets found. They do like to disappear for a time and the neighborhood is a community one filled with kids and cats on every corner. Maybe Bubbles just wanted a new type of kibble for a week and will be home for comfort food soon.

Check out this fallen branch in the missing cat's neighborhood

It was cool to check out a new neighborhood in Davis. This area is Village Homes, (the following is copied and pasted from daviswiki.org) designed and built (starting in 1964) by Michael and Judy Corbett on 60 acres in West Davis. The development comprises 220 single family homes, 20 apartments, and Cooperative Housing at Sunwise. Most of the buildings incorporate solar power and design features. There is business space in the community center, an inn, an olympic-sized pool, and a large playing field. Village Homes is one of the nicest places in Davis to live. There is a playground near the Community Center.

    http://daviswiki.org/Village_Homes?sendfile=true&file=vinyard.jpg&thumb=yes&size=192   http://daviswiki.org/Village_Homes?sendfile=true&file=gbelt.jpg&thumb=yes&size=192
The village has its own vineyards throughout the neighborhood and garden belts snake throughout the village so residents can grow their own produce

Many of the streets in this neighborhood are named after places and characters in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings books, causing some to refer to the neighborhood as "Middle-Earth." There is a continuous bike path on the western edge of Village Homes next to the gardens, and there is a geocache ([WWW]"Gardens of delight: West"). There is a parallel bike path through the middle of Village Homes crossing all of the streets, with smaller paths between the backyards (there are few fences).

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2444/4013202398_5aa45d6814.jpg

Village Homes was actually quite the place to be in the early 1980's. Jane Fonda reportedly bought a house in her pre-Ted Turner phase.

A cool entry gate with a turtle and a giraffe amphibious rig

We walked the neighboring hoods distributing fliers and chatting with folks about the missing Bubbles. It felt good to help. I hope the Bubble cat comes home.

Michael and his band mate Erik are here. We made a terrific dinner and the boys are sitting around working on new music. I need to go to bed cause I have houses to clean tomorrow. They are looking for movies to watch.

That sums up the week. I hope to make it up the hill to help my friend Kim pack and to visit my mom and my daughter.

    A fantastic Beat Conference.

I laid low the night before. Made a great dinner, drank some wine and watched Kill Bill. For some reason or another Quentin Tarantino films relax me. I love watching Pulp Fiction around the holidays. Kill Bill can really help me to destress. And Resevoir Dogs, just cause. I had the best nights sleep. I had a dream that I was making out with a guy who looked like an older Robbie Benson. Sweeeeet!

Got up early and rode my bike downtown. Got there early grabbed a triple cap and set to task.

Marly (she does tons of stuff for KDVS, the college radio station) with Lexi (very very sassy and smart!), Marly organizes all the new music events at the gallery and Lexi works at the coffee shop

Everything was actually very organized. I am proud of Stephanie (I love Stephanie, LOVE HER. She is beautiful smart creative, I adore her and am inspired by her) and Marly for doing such a great job of organizing. Things seem to come together pretty cohesively which is not typical with the gallery. I was just so happy to be there. Rick and Nancy were kind of grumpy. Typical for any event. They have been doing this for years and love to kvetch.

    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3534/4002280616_84d985c16a_m.jpg  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3499/4002202159_a8decdcfa9_m.jpg  http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2648/4002959768_6bb4a5401b_m.jpg  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3296/4002254634_bdbedfb2a9_m.jpg

Stage and sidewalk next to the gallery, and Davis Commons lawn across the street, nice crowd!

The crowds were slow to show up but they did. The weather was perfect. This year they had the Kid's n Clay deal plus a Kid's Can Paint wall. There were twice as many paint performers than I had seen in the past. The music was non stop and terrific. I believe there were two stages of continuous music and one stage for continuous performance painting. One of the music stages was set up by the Kids Can Paint canvas wall. The coffee shop was hopping and they were serving beer and wine from the gazebo in front of the gallery. I described the two block area in front of the gallery as one big out door patio. It was that cozy and welcoming.

    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/4002243438_bd14238a6e.jpg

From your left Mitch, very cute artist that also did some performance art with his very handsome dad (I asked Dad if he would like to join Kim and I for cocktails but unfortunately he was at the event with his TWO girlfriends...curses!), Charlie (long time gallery minion and talented artist) and my darling Stephanie, WORKING their respective groove things

I tried to be helpful and do the organizing crap that I am so good at and tidy up stuff. Stephanie and I talked about stuff that never changes around there. I just want to help where I can and she really knows what is going on so I updated the art inventory stuff they use. Hoping to lessen some stuff on Steph's to do list, answered questions and queried about getting a glass of beer after lunch...Priorities.

Stephanie with John and the cool intern Rachel (who is responsible for ALL the outdoor stage and audience photos, thank you Rachel!)

The Beat show was fantastic. I really need Steph to describe the show and pieces. Lots of abstract. I am in general not a fan of abstracts but honestly, when they are done well I may prefer them over many other facet of art. When they are good they are very very good.

There were performance sculptures and painters doing their things to live fabulous music plus free painting and ceramic events for kids - totally awesome!

This year the artists and musicians were extraordinarily kind and wonderful. Now I have not been dealing with them for the past month like every one else, but really, everyone was very cool and easy going.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2468/4001418645_1f7d73f9b9.jpg

Of course the gallery minions were up to all kinds of no good. Hard work, free booze and no good can be a very very entertaining combination.

Kimmy looking all Dolly  in the Beat Room

I rode my bike home and changed clothes for the evenings events. Kim drove me back so I wouldn't be serving (read taste testing) booze and driving. Things never got crazy which was a great. Once the eves event began to commence Stephanie and I were out serving booze on the Gazebo.

We had a little struggle with the beer foaming too much. Rick showed us the proper way to pour it. Honestly those moving keg dispensers are so sensitive to every little thing. Steph and I have poured a couple of beers in our day...but, nevertheless, Rick got the situation in hand.

Stephanie could not miss Keith Abbott reading from and discussing his memoirs on Richard Brautigan. Published in the fall of this year was actually for sale at the gallery last night.

An additional show at the gallery was Gwen, an artists who creates wearable one of a kind paper mache art that is amazing beautiful, provocative and amusing. Her show on the loft was fantastic. Her models (the paper dolls) that were at the Beat Conference to show off her wares were stunning. As Gwen is herself. Wow.

    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2533/4001465563_5aa10d0840.jpg   http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2570/4001456187_2b77c86405.jpg

Rick with the Paper Dolls, they also set up a paper mache room in which the girls danced and enticed the audience with their beautiful paper mached forms

One thing for sure, Kim and I observed as we checked out these paper wares, no way we could wear these things no matter how cute we might look. One hot flash and it would be ALL OVER. Not pretty, I tell you...

So, I called Rick and Stephanie this morning to see how everything was going at the gallery, how big was the mess, how was their morning going? I also mentioned that Kim and I were drinking Bloody Mary's and Screw Drivers.

    The music of RACE!

A concurrent gallery-wide exhibition of Beat art will include paintings from the some of the most intriguing artists of the era. Our two live venues will feature the artists working at a rapid pace in a public venue- a unique and exclusive privilege for the audience.

Additionally, the Jack Kerouac Annual Poetry contest will be held offering the winner the chance to read their poetry at the conference as well as a $50 cash prize. See the official rules and guidelines.

Motoshi was born in the sister city of Sacramento, Matsuyama City, Japan. Motoshi began his long pursuit of music at three years of age, with the piano, then continued with the guitar. His love of music has influenced his life deeply. In Japan all through his studies in The University of Tokyo, with university level Judo competition, and in becoming a sushi chef, music was always a driving beat to his life. This drive and rhythm comes through no matter what instrument he is playing. Whether he is performing for a private wedding or event, or performing on stage with his electric guitar. His dedication and passion are always evident in the preciseness of his playing. In Tokyo he played the acoustic and electric guitar in professional Jazz bands and the Swing Journal magazine described him as "one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians."

In 1997, Mr. Kosako moved to the United States and soon after, he gave up the guitar completely and started playing the harp. He is primarily self-taught with a few lessons from Dominique Piana of Holly Name College (Oakland, CA) to learn fundamental harp technique. He began performing numerous concerts as a soloist and as an accompanist for singers, flutists and violinists. Writing music for productions, and playing for public events. In 2002 and 2003 he recorded his first two solo albums Celestial Harp I and Celestial Harp II. In 2006 Motoshi had the distinguished honor of being named principal harpist of the Stockton Symphony Orchestra, under the very capable baton of Conductor, Mr. Peter Jaffe.

You can also see him playing for the Folsom Lake Symphony Orchestra, Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and many Choirs. In early spring of 2006, Motoshi began to turn his mind to the possibility of playing jazz, his preference in music, on the harp. Motoshi spent many hours studying, listening to the greats, to other Jazz Harpists, and became convinced that he could, and would play, what he terms hard core jazz on the harp. Which brought him to Salt Lake City, August 1st, before the most qualified, respected Jazz Harp professional of our time, to play for them at the International Jazz Harp Competition. Where in he won 2nd place, with his "ground breaking" style.

Nancy Ostrovsky was born in North Africa and lived in various countries in Asia, and it is this past that is at the heart of her oeuvre. Ostrovsky has been called "one of the pioneers of performance painting." She creates "Paintings to Music" as she shares the stage with a live jazz band. Ostrovsky uses the immediacy of the musicians, the music and environment to interpret the performance in a highly original and innovative context.

    Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

Life is handing out lemons around here. No work, no money, stress filled court date. Blah blah blah...

Nevertheless...cool things are going on. And not just the lower temps...finally.

Afternoon Brother asleep in my living room, like little Afternoon Angels

My sons band, Afternoon Brother, took to the road last week. For one reason or another they always seem to head out on tour from my house. After a few cups of coffee and a big breakfast.

The official tour rig has new brakes, tires and has been antlerized for the road

They were very enthusiastic and looking forward to their tour dates. I see they are book through the end of October but they plan to continue road tripping, couch surfing and show playing through the new year. They all three made a bet to not cut their hair until September 22nd 2010. A year from the official bet date. Ahhhh boys...

Jon (drummer), in the red on your left, is gonna have quite a bit of hair by September 22, 2010. Next to him is Michael, my son, and Erik, on guitar

I also planned a weeknight party at my place for this past Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday mornings were early and stress filled ventures but I knew some socializing would take away the sting.

So many of us have been so busy and hunkered down with all the family and financial deals in our own worlds. I thought a more intimate get together of special friends on a mid week early night would be fun.  Quite a few showed up despite it being a school night.

Kim the instigator of Hot Dog silliness...and other shenanigans

Kim came early and helped with this and that. I made chicken (and cheese) enchiladas, refried beans and sangria.

    The enchiladas got eaten!

Guests began showing up, pitchers of sangrias were foisted about, glasses were filled and chips were dipped. Everyone brought a dish to compliment the festive entree. I tried to introduce everyone, some knew each other and some did not. Some had not seen each other in some time.

Some one said it was Cassi's magical garden, how sweet!

My place was getting crowded, everyone filled up their plates and we moved the party outside under my glowing bamboo. The temps have cooled but just a sweater was needed to be comfortable and we all begin visiting and catching up.

Debi and Todd, Joe and Connie, Lauren and Paul

All my favorite Davis friends were in the house, (Bev is not in these pictures but I will point her out later). Even with my Davis pals, though most knew each other, some did not. But most of us have not hung out all that much lately. My friend Lauren makes the most cool and adorable aprons and goody tchotchkes. She paints and sews and creates things with a sense of usefulness and humor. She is funny and so inspiring as a mom. Her husband, Paul, compliments her perfectly.

Kim with Vi and Quentin with Bogden (I have seen a glass of sangria make a man do many things he later regrets)

My long time dear friends came along all the way to Davis too. Bogden came over after just having driven home from Southern California. Vi had never met Debi but is a fan of her blog. Isn't that so cool when xangan's hook up? Vi is Kim's mother in law, she agreed to come all the way to Davis to try to hook Kimmers up (His wife Tracy passed about two and half years ago, tragic to say the least). I expect to see Kim and Kim to meet again...

Plenty of food and booze got moved outside. No one was left empty handed or parched on my watch...

    Hmmmm....mine is definitely bigger...

The hot dog made the rounds. I mean could ya call it a party with out it? Not where I come from. It was decided that I am now the only bad influence in five counties. We might still be counting...

These beautiful little monkeys are Maya and Piper

They have no problem with a camera wielding hostess. Their parents are Lauren and Paul. These little girls are just as funny and smart as they are incredibly charming and adorable. What a wonderful eve listening to them play with and taunt each other in their high energy little girl way.

That would be Bev  being a goofball for the camera, I swear she is as bad as any little kid. Errr...I mean, as good.

I have mentioned Bev around here quite a bit last year. She has been super busy with work substitute teaching here in Davis. Every kid in town knows who she is and stop her every where to let her know the haps in their world. Her daughter goes to college in Minnesota. She has a fabulous family. I felt so lucky that she took a minute to come hang out. Everyone is just so flippin' busy these days.

Except Kim and I. Between being unemployed and not having any money we always seem to find time to throw swanky soiree's and travel around with a plastic hot dog for silly photo ops. Everyone wants to be us.

So aside from Connie pinching her finger on one of my chairs (oh my dog, her first time at my home and my furniture tries to maim her...I owe her dish or car washing for the rest of her life now...), the evening seemed to have ended with no harm coming to any animals (well, aside from that chicken I roasted for those enchiladas), children or dear liquored up friends. Sangria was served responsibly. Chit chat was kept to a social commentary and only circled to edge of politics and religion.

I fell into a satisfied slumber after I said my last good night and picked up the garbage and dirty dishes. I awoke a little too early and could not get back to sleep. I decided to take inventory of the mess I would need to clean up. I walked out into the back yard to see if Kim and I missed anything last night and stumbled over this...

Right on my walkway...how would I get the recycling to the trash in time...

There is always one...but fortunately this time, not me.

Further wonderfulness...my daughter had her first sonogram this morning. She and her boyfriend saw their little bean baby and she said he little offspring was jumping around in her tummy. She said it looked just like a cartoon. I am so excited for them and me!

So, I am sitting here eating some left over black bean salsa, sipping a martini and am gonna call it an early night.

Life is hard but we all survive...
